On Selfishness

I am under the belief, (I’ve always wanted to write that line) that there are two ties of selfishness that people partake in. One type of selfishness is lifetime selfishness and the other type is periodic selfishness.

Lifetime Selfishness is the one that everyone thinks about when thinking about selfishness. This is the I'm all about me just to be about me and I don’t care who I hurt selfishness. The kind of selfishness, that the person always puts themselves because they can’t or won’t put anyone else first. It doesn't matter how much you try to talk to them or get them to see things in a different way, at the end of the day it is all about them. They will do anything to maintain this. These types of individuals may not necessarily care or even make changes in their lives. These are the types of people who will be selfish until the day the die.

Periodic selfishness is the other type of selfish. The type of selfish that says, “Hey, I am trying to get my life right, and achieve the type of life I want to live.” This is the type of selfish that takes risks, and initiates growth. The difficulty of periodic selfishness is that at times it can look like lifetime selfishness, to other people. The other people involved can make the individual in a periodic selfish phase feel guilty or be a contributing factor to the person in the phase, cut their phase shorter than they should.

At the end of the day though, periodic selfishness is about achieving, living, and reaching goals. It is the selfishness of self discovery and experience, it is the type of selfishness than everyone deserves and should be able to experience at least once in their lives.

So here is to periodic selfishness. Selfishness for the world, for life, for love, for travel, for art, for food, for goals, because at the end of the day we only get one life to live. One chance to try this out.

And my I repeat that everyone deserves the chance to embrace periodic selfishness.
