5 Ways to Get Back to Yourself, After Experiencing an Emotional Low or Depression

Depression periods are the worst.

Experiencing an emotional how is hard.

Those periods when the whole world is clouded in gray, the only emotion you can feel is blue, and it seems like nothing is working out when you start to wonder how much longer you can go on for. Those periods that show up in forms of irritability or wanting to scream to be heard. Those times when getting out of bed and interacting with the world takes all of the strength that you can muster.

For everyone, these periods last different amounts of time. It could be a couple of hours, a couple of days, a couple of months, and sometimes maybe even longer than that for some.

Recently, I went through one of these periods within my own life and I was stuck in it for a while, and once I was finally out of it, I felt weak and tired, and it took me a bit more time to get back on track. To get back to myself.

So here are some ways that you can get back to yourself, after experiencing an emotional low or depression period.

  1. Hang out with friends - After retreating into yourself for a period of time, getting back into the world can make you feel like a baby deer learning to walk for the first time. Wobbly legs and all, and one of the best ways to get reacquainted into the social aspects of life is to hang out with friends. Whether this is the calm friends or the wild friends, the best thing once the fog is lifting can be to just hang out with friends who make you want to grab life and experience it for all its worth.

  2. Reflect - I write about reflection a lot! But I do think it is a necessary action for everyone to take throughout life. With that, reflection after a down period is so important. Thinking about the cause of the down period, and if this is a one-time thing, compared to a long to term thing, is important to know, acknowledge, and decipher.

  3. Self-care - When trying to get back on track you need to take some time to care for yourself. Participate in acts of self-care, to not only feel better but to heal from the experience.

  4. Treat yourself - Treat yourself! When you are in the process of healing and trying to get back to yourself again, feel free to treat yourself. Now, this doesn't have to be a big or crazy or expensive purchase but treat yourself to that cupcake, that sweater, those pair of boots. Something for you, from you. A gift for surviving. A gift for making it through.

  5. Don’t rush and breathe - The most important thing when getting out of the depression period, or rising from the emotional low, is to not rush it. Getting back to yourself is a process and you can’t rush that process. Depending on how long you experienced the low period you can’t just bounce back to being yourself right away, so giving yourself time is one of the best things you can do. Along with taking time to breathe and ease your way back into being you.
